After a short summer, fall sports are already here at Mar Vista High School. The student-athletes and coaches have been working this pre-season to get their teams ready for the upcoming season. Here’s a quick preview of the Fall Sports:

Cross Country: Led by long-time coach, and Mariner alum, Benny Holt, along with assistance from Estrella Pimentel, the Mariners just competed in their first race of the season at Lindo Lakes in Lakeside. The Boys team is led by captain and All-League returner Sebastian Pimentel, senior Jonathan Garcia, and returning All-League performer Robert Gonzalez. The Girls are led by senior Yram Padilla, senior Isabelle Lopez and junior Nadia Gurrola. They start their South Bay League meets against Southwest High School on Oct. 4.

Boys Water Polo: Led by long-time coach and Mariner alum Chad Kavanagh, the Mariners are coming off a huge season last year in which they were CIF Division II runner-up. This year, they will be in Division I and will continue to compete in the Metro-Mesa League. Led by returning All-League performers, Levi Lord, Fletcher Field and Ethan Hastings, the Mariners face a tough non-conference schedule as they compete in three separate tournaments (Helix Tournament, Poseidon Tournament, and the San Diego Open). Their first Mesa League contest is Sept. 13 against Eastlake.

Girls Tennis: Led by recently retired Mariner teacher, Rick Nichols, the Lady Mariners are poised to build on their 11-2 record last year and compete for a South Bay League title. The Mariners return All League performers Bryanna Schaffer and Jennifer Mendoza along with a slew of veterans including Abi Rivera, Pamela Munoz, Damiana Young, and Brenda Zapien. The Mariners take on Kearny this week and then start South Bay League play next week against Southwest and Sweetwater.

Football: Led by seventh year coach Tyler Arciaga, the Mariner return a very young and inexperienced team. But that didn’t stop the Mariners in their home opener on Aug. 23 as they showed some grit to come away with a nail-biting 19-18 victory over Classical Academy. In the game, they were led by junior Isaac Maldonado who returned a punt for a touchdown, had a rushing touchdown and an interception. Defensively, the Mariners were led by Paul Fieweger who had three sacks. The captains for this season are seniors Diego Garza, Fieweger, and Zack Duhala. The Mariners travel up to Santa Ana Valley High School for their Week 2 matchup. Homecoming is Sept. 20 against Mission Bay and the Bell Game against Southwest is Oct. 11 at Mar Vista.

Girls Golf: Led by long time coach and Mar Vista High Teacher of the Year Randy Rosenheim, the lady Mariners are looking to repeat their success from last season where they were South Bay League Co-Champs. They return a shipload of veterans including All League performers: Melanie Clamp, Summer Chalmers, Paige Helmers, and Tara Fitzgerald. They are lucky enough to call the Coronado Golf Course their home and they are currently 3-0 in South League having beat Montgomery, San Ysidro and Sweetwater. They continue South Bay League play this week against San Ysidro, Castle Park and Chula Vista.

Girls Volleyball: Led by second year head coach Sean Matthews, the Lady Mariners have been working hard in the off-season to prepare for the ultra-competitive Mesa League. Led by All League performer and Division 1 commit (University of Akron) Genevieve Hara and senior returner Kaelin McManus, the Lady Mariners are off to a great start as they are 2-0 after defeating Chula Vista and Hilltop. They will take on Santana and El Cajon Valley over the next two weeks prior to starting Mesa League play against Mater Dei on Sept. 11 and Montgomery on Sept. 17.
