The Mar Vista Mariners have an enormous amount of optimism for the 2019-20 varsity basketball season. The Mariners return five of their top seven returning scorers and two transfers who started at their respective high school. The Mariners have a brand new staff led by Head Coach Scott Reed, and assistants Alton Colter, ‘83 Mar Vista grad, and Corey “Chip” Cheney.

Forward Gabe Schiazza, the team’s returning leading scorer is clearly the leader of the ball club. He’s an excellent shooter and rebounder. Guards Pete Flores and Dylan Wolfe are returning starters who will be counted on for leadership. Wolfe has a chance to be one of the better defenders in the league, and will draw the opponents’ best perimeter player on most nights. Forward Anthony Gass and Center Pablo Malawe, a college football prospect in his own right, are key returning role players who provided valuable minutes on the varsity last year.

The newcomers have created a buzz around the program. Two sophomore transfers, forward Josh Dupree and guard Courtland Camper III were starters for Chula Vista last year and should have a huge impact. Dupree and Camper are two of the best sophomores in the South Bay expect both to be double digit scorers. Jeffrey Temcho is also one of the best sophomores in the South Bay; he has an advanced feel for the game and makes others around him better. Freshman Josiah Scott was just featured by full-time hoops as one of the top freshman in San Diego County. He is an excellent floor general and a high level decision maker.

Full-time hoops tweeted that Division V Mar Vista Mariners are creating a lot of buzz in the preseason. The Mariners fully expect to have their first winning season since the 2008-2009 team.
