The winter athletic season is in full stride at Mar Vista High School. Student-Athletes and coaches have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming season. Here is a pre-season recap of our winter sports teams.

Roller Hockey: The Mariner Roller Hockey Team, one of the few teams that is co-ed, is currently 1-4 and is led by second year Head Coach Eloy Rodriguez (who was an All-League Performer years ago). They are led by returners Isaac Suarez and goalie Tiffany O’Neil. The Mariners had a close loss to Southwest (5-4) but broke through with a big win against Castle Park (6-4). They have a little break during Christmas but then have two league games this upcoming week against Chula Vista and San Ysidro starting on Jan. 8.

Girls Soccer: The Lady Mariners, led by long-time coach Gisela Wolfe, are currently 1-6 overall after a grueling pre-season and Mesa League schedule. The Lady Mariners are led by returning seniors Giselle Medina, Samantha Crawley, Genevieve Hara and Briana Ayala. This is the second year that the Lady Mariners moved up to the Mesa League, which is the top tier of the Metro Conference. The Lady Mariners broke through with a non-league win against Castle Park. The Lady Mariners are in several tournaments over break and then they will take on non-league opponents University City, Pacific Ridge, and Mission Bay right after the New Year.

Boys Soccer: Led by fifth-year coach Nacho Pena, the Mariners are currently 2-1-2 with big wins against Ramona and Morse and ties coming against Bonita Vista and Del Lago. The Mariners are a young team led by leading goal scorers Juan Lopez, Christian Flores and Adan Farhan. They have a break during Christmas but their next two league opponents are Olympian and Sweetwater.

Boys Basketball: Led by first-year coach Scott Reed is currently 7-3 (1-0 in South Bay League). They started off the year with a big win against Monte Vista and began South Bay League play with a win against Chula Vista. They are led by leading scorers Gabe Schiazza, senior, and Josiah Scott, freshman, along with senior Dylan Wolfe who leads the team in assists. The Mariners have a little break over Christmas and New Years but then take on South Bay League foes Castle Park and San Ysidro, who boast America’s number one freshman Mikey Williams on Jan. 8.

Girls Basketball: The Lady Mariners are led by second year coach Joel Vizcarra and seniors Camryn Wold and Kaliah Alcaraz. They bumped up to Division III this season and played a gauntlet of strong teams during their pre-season: Otay Ranch, Our Lady of Peace, Santana and Del Norte. The Lady Mariners are currently 1-10 but got a nice win against Crawford. They play in the Bonita Vista Invitational over Christmas and then continue South Bay League play after the New Year against San Ysidro and Castle Park.

Girls Water Polo: Led by long-time aquatics coach Chad Kavanagh, the Lady Mariners sit at 3-1 overall with big wins against Steele Canyon, La Costa Canyon and Scripps Ranch. They play a challenging non-league Schedule with three tournaments: East County Invitational, the Winter Classic, and the San Diego Open. They are lead by senior Melanie Clamp, who leads the teams in goals and assist, 21 and 10, respectively. Sophomore Tatum Billings is second on the team in goals and assist (9/9) and junior Kayla Quinones (tied for second on the team with 9 assists). They are currently in the middle of the Winter Classic and then have a break during Christmas and New Years before taking on Mesa League opponents Hilltop and Otay Ranch.

Wrestling: The Mariner Wrestling Program is led by first year Head Coach Sergio Delos Reyes. The Mariner Wrestling Program is comprised of boys and girls. Girls Wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in the county and they have their own tournaments and CIF Championships. On the girl’s side junior Anya Rodriguez, a past CIF State Tournament participant, senior Rose Kanzaki and senior Mary Cincotta have all medaled in tournaments this year (Monte Vista and Olympian). On the Boys side, they are led by senior Lyle Nacua. The Mariner just lost their first South Bay League dual meet against Montgomery, but look to come back strong in hosting two meets after break: Castle Park (Jan. 9 at 3 p.m.) and Chula Vista (Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m.)
