Going For The Rebound ...

Mar Vista varsity girls basketball team took on the Coronado Islanders in a non-conference away game on Saturday, Feb. 1. Despite the team’s intensity, the Lady Mariners lost to the Islanders. The last home game of the season will be on Monday, Feb. 10, against Southwest in a rivalry game. The game will begin at 6 p.m. Come and support the team. Pictured, freshman Kimmie Curran, No. 5, and senior Seriah Cage, No. 30, are all in for the game against Coronado.

The Mariners were 8-6 at our last update. Since then the hardworking Mariners have won 6 of 7 of their last games and their record stands at 14-7 and 5-2 in league. To put this in perspective the two prior seasons the Mariners won 15 games total.

On Jan. 13, Mar Vista traveled to Crawford and defeated the Colts 63-45 and were led by Dylan Wolfe’s 15 points.

Two days later, on Jan. 15, the Mariners hosted Chula Vista Learning Community Center and passed the century mark for the first time with a 109-37 win, placing seven different Mariners in double figures. Scoring was led by Josiah Scott with 20, Gabe Schiazza with 18, Pete Flores with 16, Dylan Wolfe with 14, Courtland Camper III 13, Josh Dupree with 12, and Jeffrey Temcho, a freshman, added 11.

The Mariners moved on to defeat arch-rival Southwest San Diego on Jan. 17, with a score of 70-46. Dupree led the team with a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 5 block shots. Schiazza and Camper added 13 each.

“The past week the mighty Mar Vista Mariners dealt with the flu bug and some injuries,” said head coach Reed Scott. “The Mariners were defeated at Kearny, 60-44, but played without leading scorer Josiah Scott. Courtland Camper led the Mariners with 11 points [in that game, Jan. 20].”

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, the Mariners traveled again, this time to take on Hilltop High in a league matchup. “[This was] one of the best games of the year for fans,” said Reed. “The game was nip and tuck. Mar Vista pulled out a huge road win 61-59. Jeffrey Temcho had 21 points and 5 assists and Courtland added 18 points and 10 rebounds.”

The Mariner’s busy schedule for the week didn’t end there. Last Friday, Jan. 24, the Mariners hosted the Spartans of Chula Vista in a league matchup. The Mariners were victorious 79-42. Flores led the team with 20 points, Schiazza 18 points and had 10 rebounds. Temcho and Scott both added 17 in the win.

On Saturday, Jan. 25, the Mariners played in the Coaches versus Cancer event hosted by Montgomery High School. Your Mariners defeated El Cajon Valley 81-65, Schiazza led the team with 27 points and 9 rebounds; Scott had 26 points and Temcho added 19.

Last week, they played Sweetwater Wednesday, Jan. 29, and San Ysidro on Jan. 31, and were defeated in both games. They regrouped came back against Calvin Christian and won 68-65.

There are a few games left of the season. Next home game is Friday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. against Del Lago Academy. They’ll take on rivals Southwest in an away game on Monday, Feb. 10 and then finish their regular season at home against Hilltop, Feb. 12, 6 p.m. The Mariners would love your support in the stands.
