Via a press release issued Monday morning, June 20, 2020, the State CIF, the governing body of high school sports in California, did the expected and delayed the start of the Fall 2020 sports season until mid-December 2020. The Fall sports schedule will now include Boys and Girls Volleyball, Boys and Girls Water Polo, Boys and Girls Cross Country and Football.
The new COVID-19 impacted high school sports reality includes Spring sports of Boys and Girls Soccer, Boys and Girls Swimming, Boys and Girls Tennis, Boys and Girls Basketball, Boys and Girls Golf, Baseball, Softball, Boys and Girls Track & Field, and Boys and Girls Lacrosse.
Essentially the State CIF provided the broad brush strokes for the beginning and end dates for the Fall and Spring schedules and left the 10 Regional CIF Sections scattered throughout the State to fill in the exact details.
Assuming the normal three-month span between the first day of practice and the last day for CIF San Diego Section Playoffs, Football would begin practice on or around January 11, 2021, and conclude by their Playoffs by April 10, 2021. Unless their seasons are shortened, Volleyball, Water Polo and Cross Country will all begin their practice sessions in mid-December 2020 and conclude their playoffs in mid-March 2021.
If you peruse the Spring schedule in particular, you’ll notice that Soccer, Track & Field, and Lacrosse, will create a huge demand for field time. In the spring, three sports will be in the same place at the same time. And there is the issue of soccer. If the San Diego Section goes along, they may suspend the rules for one year so kids can play club soccer at the same time.
Another factor is Baseball, Softball, and Track & Field all have as their last day for Section Playoffs, Saturday June 19, 2021.
In their press release, the CIF San Diego Section said, “Specifics of the plan provides for two seasons of sport, which will serve to maximize the length of each season while not eliminating any athletic opportunities in a reduced athletic calendar for the year. The adjusted calendar distributes the athletic offerings into a Fall/Winter Season, and a Spring Season in hope of balancing the opportunities for all student athletes. In collaboration with our Board of Managers, Conference Presidents, Sport Specific Advisory Committees and Officials Association, we will be coming together over the next couple weeks to finalize the dates and schedules for each of the seasons of sport for our section. We understand that this has been a difficult period of time for our student athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, and parents with so much uncertainty and information changing on a daily basis. With a plan in place, we look forward to continuing to collaborate with leaders from across our section and state as we prepare for the start of the 2020-2021 athletic year.”
