Playoff Bound ...

Goalie Dylan Hartley blocks a shot against Eastlake during their game on Oct. 29. The Mariners won 19-6.

The Mar Vista community has good reason to hold their heads up high this week, as the Boys’ Water Polo team drew the No. 1 seed in Division I in the CIF playoffs. The boys have put together a magnificent season as they smashed out a 23-5 record en route to earning their No. I seed.

As part of their successes this season, the Mariners went 10-0 in league to capture the Mesa league title, outscoring their opponents 195-54. The Mar Vista boys left no doubt as to who was the dominant water polo program in the South Bay is for 2021. The stacked Mar Vista roster consists of seniors Ethan Hastings, Fletcher Field, Luke Wilson, Carlos Ibarra, Benny Ramseier, TC Spaulding, and Kevin Stucki, as well as juniors Dylan Hartley, Bradford Dickson, Nathan Crosby, Hayden Leslie, and Trevor Rector.

The boys have left a lasting impression on Head Coach Chad Kavanagh, who said, “There is something special about this team. They have worked so hard for so long, and we are hoping we can win the first boys water polo championship for Mar Vista, as well as, be the first boys team to represent Mar Vista at the State Championships.”

Mar Vista came into the season with a bunch of experience, as most of the boys started their water polo careers as 8 or 9-year-olds with South Coast Water Polo Club. The years of experience, and added benefit of playing together for so long, has shown in the water, as they have displayed a tremendous ability to bring out the best in each other.

The Mariner boys will be tested in their quest for the first Boys CIF title in school history. With their No. 1 seeding, they skip the first round of CIF playoffs. Their talents, teamwork, and game planning will be challenged as they begin in the quarterfinals, starting at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 6, as they take on the winner of Wednesday’s Helix vs Classical Academy game. Division I playoffs will continue Wednesday, Nov. 10 with the semifinals at 5:45 p.m., and conclude on Saturday, Nov. 13 with the final at 5 p.m. All games will be played at La Jolla Coggan Pool.
