The Mar Vista boys’ water polo team is now one step closer to earning the CIF Division 1 crown with Saturday’s Quarterfinal win over Helix Charter School, 17-7.
In front of a large crowd, the Mariners, seeded first in Division 1, took on the eight seeded Highlanders, and set a pace that buried Helix early. Within the first minute of play, Ethan Hastings and Bradford Dickson found the back of the goal to set Mar Vista up for a game long lead. By the end of the first quarter, three more goals by Hastings, a goal each by Trevor Rector and Fletcher Field, and a Helix goal, made the score 7-1. With the help of a stifling defense and mature offensive attack, the Mariners never let the game get close.
The leading scorers on the day were Rector (5 goals, 3 assists), Field (3 goals, 3 assists), Dickson (1 goal, 4 assists), Carlos Ibarra (3 goals, 1 assist), and Hastings (4 goals). Defensively, the boys racked up 12 steals while allowing very few shots on goal. Of those shots, Goalie Dylan Hartley knocked down four. “I’m really proud of these guys with how much they have learned and improved over the past three years, playing in Division 1,” says Coach Chad Kavanagh. “It has been quite an adjustment, but our kids have risen to the challenge and become a legitimate division contender. It has been a really fun season with these guys, and I am hoping that we can take it all the way to the end”
Because of their win, the Mar Vista Mariners will go on to face Canyon Crest Academy in the semifinals, Wednesday, November 10 at 5:45 p.m., at La Jolla Coggan Pool. A win will set them up for a Championship match against the winner of Poway and Santana. Junior Center Guard, Bradford Dickson, said, “I am really hopeful and excited for this season. This is what we have been working up to since we were in elementary school.” Senior Captain Field added, “I’m extremely excited this year and can’t wait to see what we can during these playoffs. This is the best team that Mar Vista has ever had and we’re going to prove that.”
