In a year marked with indecisiveness and confusion, the Mar Vista Mariners Baseball team took the opportunity to play, and became a force to be reckoned with in CIF Division IV.
Senior captain Ryan Lee said, “The team is looking good as we finished up the season, and we are heading into the playoffs strong and with a lot of confidence.”
The Mariners compiled an 18-8 record, and currently hold the second spot in Division IV. They will enter CIF playoffs on a high note.
Mar Vista finished the season with a 7-3 league record, falling short to Mater Dei and league champion Olympian. Six Mariners did land on All-League teams, though, each earning those honors with blistering stat lines. First Team players are senior Josh Barbato, senior Ryan Bell and sophomore Devon King. On Second Team, Mar Vista landed senior Diego Barquin, senior Ryan Lee, and junior Dante Pacheco. These six led the Mariners to a .343 team batting average in league, and an average of over 7 runs per game. On the mound, Mariner pitchers compiled a respectable 2.74 ERA in league play while striking out 64 batters in the 10 league games.
CIF playoffs start this week, and the Mariners will have home field advantage throughout their side of the bracket. The first round game will be played Wednesday, June 9, at Mar Vista when the Mariners take on the winner of the play- in game between seventh ranked Oceanside and 12th ranked High Tech High Chula Vista, (score unavailable at press time). The Round 2 game will be held on Friday, June 11, at home, and could match up Mar Vista against a tough 3 seeded Mission Vista team. Division IV finals are at Eastlake High, on June 19, at 1 p.m.
