The 14U boys of Costa del Sur Water Polo club competed in the Junior Olympics Nationals Water Polo Tournament, and took home the bronze medal, after playing nine games in four days, from July 20-23.

The team consists of boys from the South Bay, La Jolla, and East County, and have been training at Mar Vista and Las Palmas pools for the past few years.

The Invitational tournament started with Costa del Sur winning big over Marin, then a respectable win over Oahu, Hawaii. Their first loss came against the Foothill Black B team in an exciting game that saw the game tied 8-8 at the end of regulation. Foothill took the win in the shootout with 4 goals to 3. Costa bounced back in the next game with a 7-5 win over Laguna Beach. The boys then rattled off three tight wins in back-and-forth games against Northwood, Westside LA, and Redlands Renegades.

The semi-final game against eventual gold medalist, South Coast Red A, was a big loss for Costa del Sur, but the boys bounced back and won the Bronze medal game against Orange County Water Polo Club Red B and took home the third place position.

Leading scorers for Costa del Sur were Mar Vista sophomores Carlos Ibarra, Kevin Stucki, and TC Spaulding. Mar Vista freshman goalie Dylan Hartley played very well, and racked up the saves, against some very good shooting teams. Mar Vista freshmen Bradford Dickson and Trevor Rector, as well as Olympian freshman Caeleb Collins and La Mesa Arts Academy eighth grader Asher Eaton, played outstanding defense as well as vital roles in the success of the offense.

It was truly a team effort with many of the games being determined by less than 2 goals.
