MVHS Softball Season Begins

Posted: Friday, March 8, 2019 5:51 pm

The Mar Vista High School varsity softball team is coached by Coach Tracey Garcia again this year and she is looking forward to the upcoming season.

Garcia brings in a little background about the Mar Vista softball. “Mar Vista High School’s Softball program is comprised of three teams: Novice, Junior Varsity and Varsity. All athletes within the program have the opportunity to bring their individual softball skills to the next level and learn to compete as a student athlete.

“Our program builds strong leaders through athletics and provides guidance to our upcoming generations. We help young women maneuver through life’s obstacles, develop leadership skills, build self-confidence, and give a sense of purpose that will foster motivation to succeed in life. At all levels within our program, student-athletes will progress through lifelong experiences that will teach them how to make the correct decisions even when faced with adversity.”

The 2019 Varsity team is comprised of seniors Jazmyne Gomez, Emily Leslie and Rebecca Romero; juniors Kaelin McManus, Erika Sanchez and Abigail Rivers; sophomores Leila Freeman, Bryanna Schaffer and Ryleigh Titilah and Lexy Tubman; and freshman Shaunessy Cardwell, Lenika Padilla and Jahzel Sesma. Other seniors in the program are Alyssa Barrows, Lilianna Cincotta, Carmen Marquez, Alyssa McCoy, Yazandra Phelps and Clarissa Ruiz.

“Our varsity girls came away with a big win in our first home game of the season vs Central from El Centro,” said Garcia. “The final score was 8-1, backed by left handed junior pitcher Abigail Rivera who had six strike outs. For her own cause, she hit a two run homerun, an over the fence home run, in the bottom of the fifth. Behind the plate, senior Emily Leslie went three for three with a stand up double, one stolen base and three RBIs. Leslie was named MaxPreps player of the game for her offensive team contribution.”

Other contributors were Cardwell with a double, Tubman with two stolen bases and Schaffer with a stolen base. Defensively, the Lady Mariners were on fire with a fielding percentage of .964.

The Lady Mariners played at home in a tournament game against the La Jolla Vikings on Friday, March 1, and walked off the field with a win, 12 -0. Sophomore Tubman was three for three at bats, with a single, a double, a triple and added a stolen base to her stats. She was player of the game. Pitcher Schaffer earned the win with eight strike outs in the five innings she pitched. The game ended at the fifth inning due to the shutout/run rule.

After the weekend, the Lady Mariners enjoyed another game at home. On Monday, March 4, the girls took on the Christian Patriots in another tournament game and continued their winning streak, coming out on top 21-2. Junior Rivera earned the win pitching, batted three for three with two RBIs. Tubman also did well, going three for four with a single, and two doubles. She also had five RBIs and three runs scored. Schaffer was another notable player going four for five with one double, five RBIs and three runs scored. Gomez also had a double and pitched for an inning, too. Romero, Padilla and Freeman all successfully stole bases.

After a great beginning of the season, softball fans will not want to miss a fun day on March 16. Garcia said, “One of our most exciting events of the season will take place on Saturday, March 16, as the 2019 Varsity Softball team takes on the Mar Vista Alumni Softball players at 1 p.m. Last year we had players from the 1970s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s participate. This is an event you definitely don’t want to miss.

“We also will be hosting a mash up game March 7 at 4 p.m. where the JV and Varsity teams are divided into two equal teams and play ball for the title of ‘Queens of the Diamond.”

Garcia also added, “Follow us on Facebook for upcoming events and games @IBMVHSoftball. Schedules will be posted on our Facebook page, and on Maxpreps.com, so come on out and cheer on your green and gold. We have many community events coming up in the beginning of 2019.”
