The Mar Vista Varsity Softball team competed away last week at Helix High School and added another win to their record. Their record currently stands 4-0

“It was a nail-biter for sure,” commented head coach Tracey Garcia of the close game.

The Helix girls scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning. All was quiet until the top of the sixth inning, when the Lady Mariners were up to bat.

“Ryleigh Titilah, a sophomore, had a stand up triple [that inning] that gave Mar Vista the go ahead at the top of the sixth,” said Garcia. The score at that point was 3-2, Mariners.

The Highlanders responded back with two more runs at the bottom of the sixth. Now the score reflected Helix on top, 4-3.

As with high school softball and baseball, games go until the seventh inning. This was when the Lady Mariners had to really show up to take the win. And they did. They scored two more runs, top of the seventh, inching them ahead 5-4. The girls held it together defensively, not letting the Highlanders add any more to the score. Final score stayed at 5-4.

“Junior Abigail Rivera was our winning pitcher, “ said Garcia, “ with eight strike outs and zero walks. Ryleigh did go two for four and had 3 RBI’s (including that triple). Erika Sanchez, junior, was two for two and scored two runs.”

“The 2019 Mar Vista Softball team has opened the season with a powerful start, earning a spot in the semi finals of their first tournament,” said Garcia. “Our student athletes communicate well together and have formed a loyalty to each other on the field. These first games have given us the opportunity to capitalize on our strengths and learn from our mistakes and weaknesses.

“Our season goals are to stay disciplined, humble and have fun playing a sport the student athletes love. These next games will help prepare our team for League play and CIF playoffs, where we will be top contenders if they continue down the path they have started.”

Next scheduled game is away at Oceanside on Monday, March 18. Next home game is Wednesday, March 20, where the Lady Mariners will face Browley in the Spring Valley Classic tournament. Both games are at 4 p.m.
