The hits keep coming as the Mar Vista Mariners baseball team wins their ninth straight game and second tournament championship of April. The Mariners won all six of their games in the Steve Vickery bracket of the GMC Tournament, outscoring their opponents 44-11.
The Saturday, April 24 championship game was a rematch between the Mariners and their Sweetwater Invitational championship opponents, Foothills Christian, and ended with Mar Vista chalking up the 5-0 win. Senior Joshua Barbato pitched five innings for the win, while the two-inning save went to junior Dante Pacheco.
Victories against Serra, Mission Bay, Morse, Foothills Christian, and San Diego sent the Mariners to the championship game. Many standout performances throughout the tournament helped to contribute to the current Mar Vista hot streak. In the six tournament games sophomore Devon King led the offensive production with a .444 batting average, including two doubles, a triple, and a home run, all while driving in eight runs. Barbato had 8 hits that led to a .400 average, with four RBI and six runs scored. Senior Ryan Lee had eight hits with three RBI, and scored seven times while junior Benny Ramseier hit .357 and scored six times. Senior Ryan Bell and freshman Andrew Guevara also had five hits a piece while senior Diego Barquin contributed with six hits and four RBI.
The pitching in the GMC Tournament was also outstanding for the Mariners as they compiled a 1.50 ERA in the six games played. Pacheco, Barquin, and Barbato all earned two wins in the tournament, while only allowing a .205 opponent batting average. The entire pitching staff racked up 43 strikeouts in 43 innings pitched.
Mar Vista will look to continue their hot streak with games this week against Foothills Christian, Torrey Pines, and Mount Miguel. Next week, Metro South Bay league play begins with Mar Vista taking on Olympian High, in what could be the biggest test for the Mariners in league play this year.
