The Boys Varsity Basketball Mariners has moved their record to 18-9, winning four games straight in the past two weeks. This was no easy feat. The Mariners defeated the then No. 2 Calvin Christian in a tight, exciting, hard fought game, coming out on top 68-65.
Calvin Christian has a 6 ft. 10 inch freshman Martin Gumwal who is averaging 16 points per game and 16 rebounds per game. But the Mar Vista Boys were not to be intimidated. Senior captain Gabe Schiazza led the team with 27 points and 7 rebounds. Jo Jo Scott had 13 points and five assists and backcourt mate Jeffrey Temcho added 10 points and five assists.
Onward to the Wednesday, Feb. 5, game where Mariners defeated league rival Castle Park 82-35. Scott had a great night with 22 points; Dylan Wolfe had 14 and Courtland Camper III and Temcho added 12 points each.
Friday night, Feb. 7, the Mariners were back in action at home versus Del Lago Academy. Mar Vista handily defeated them, 82-38, behind a balanced scoring attack. Schiazza came off the court with 21 points, and paced the Mariners. Camper had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Scott had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Pete Flores and Temcho added 10 points each.
On Monday night, Feb. 10, the Mariners continued their winning streak and ruined senior night for league rival Southwest with a 74-45 win. The first half was nip and tuck, with the Mariners going into the half, up 32-29. Mar Vista came out with fire in their eyes in the second half, outscoring the Raiders 42-16. Schiazza led the team with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Scott had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Temcho had 12 points and 5 steals and Flores added 10.
The Mariners head into their final regular season game, standing at their 18-9 record and are hosting league rival Hilltop Wednesday night, Feb. 12. The Mariners will be celebrating their seniors at this senior night game.
Gabe Schiazza has scored 654 points and has 351 rebounds in his three years on varsity and is currently being recruited by Cuyamaca JC and Oxnard JC. Dylan Wolfe has scored 422 points and 146 assists in his career and Pete Flores has scored 409 points and has 120 steals.
“These three seniors have led the Mariners revival in its basketball program,” said head coach Reed Scott. “They are not only good basketball players, but amazing students. All three have about a 3.7 GPA.”
