On Wednesday, April 3, the Mar Vista Mariners hosted the Castle Park Trojans in their first conference game of the season and came out on top, winning 9-5.

The Mariners started out strong, earning six hits by the bottom of the second inning, while keeping the Trojans scoreless. While the Trojans came back in the fourth and fifth innings with their five runs, the Mariners consistently added to their scores throughout the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Winning pitcher of the game was Josh Barbato, a sophomore, with the save by Jose Luna, senior. Seniors Jason Capron and Zachary Hastings led the team with two hits a piece and three RBIs, Damon Thomas made a triple play at bat and Capron also edged in three stolen bases. Defensively, Chris Pardinas had a double play against the Trojans.

There was a rematch with Castle Park on the following Friday, April 5, where the Mar Vista played at their field and the story went a little differently than the first game. The final score was 4-1, Trojans.

Hastings led the team with two hits and Pardinas, a senior, had the only RBI, bringing Hastings in for the run. Capron also managed another stolen base against the Trojans. Hastings and junior Brandon Cosio both had double plays in the outfield.

“Pardinas was the losing pitcher,” said head coach Bobby Rector, “although he only gave up one hit in five innings. Now we are 1-1 in league.”

Similarly, the Mariners have an 8-8 season record total.

“This is a great group of young men who never give up,” continued Rector. “We have kept just about every game close this year, and we were a hit away from winning most of the games we lost [this season]. We have been working a lot at practice in getting these boys to improve their approaches at the plate and ultimately increase the amount of runs we are driving in.”

Next up the Mariners face Mater Dei Catholic at home on Friday, April 12 at 3 p.m.
