The Mar Vista Boys’ Water Polo team showed why they are a legitimate CIF Division I threat, as they dominated the competition in the Rancho Bernardo Tournament this past weekend, Aug. 27-29. The Mariners went 5-0 for the weekend with big wins over Mission Hills, Patrick Henry, Rancho Bernardo, Canyon Crest Academy, and a Championship win over powerhouse Poway.

Mar Vista outscored their opponents by a margin of 75-16, while playing a suffocating defense and a relentless offensive attack.

Offensively the Mariners were led by junior Trevor Rector’s 28 points (15 goals, 13 assists); senior Ethan Hastings’ 26 points (20 goals, 6 assists); senior Fletcher Field’s 24 points (15 goals, 9 assists); junior Bradford Dickson’s 10 points (7 goals, 3 assists); senior TC Spaulding’s 8 points (5 goals, 3 assists); senior Luke Wilson’s 7 points (4 goals, 3 assists); and junior Nathan Crosby’s 7 points (3 goals, 4 assists).

On the defensive side, Mar Vista played a dominant press defense that resulted in only 3.2 goals per game. Junior goalie Dylan Hartley racked up 48 saves, and a 75.8% block percentage. Leading the team in steals was Hastings (16), followed by Rector (14), Dickson (10), Field (6), Spaulding (6), and junior Hayden Leslie (6).

“I am super proud of this team,” says Head Coach Chad Kavanagh, “especially that we were able to come back and beat Poway, who knocked us out of the CIF playoffs last season.”

When asked about expectations for the season, Kavanagh responded, “It is looking like it could be a standout season for Mar Vista Boys Water Polo. I’m really excited to see it through.”

The Mar Vista Boys’ Water Polo team’s next contest will be a home match, Friday, Sept. 3 against Torrey Pines, at 3:30 p.m. Their new home pool is Las Palmas, in National City, where the water polo program will play all their home games until the new pool construction is completed at Mar Vista.
