Diego Barquin would not be denied at the plate when runners were on base Saturday, April 10, driving in four runs on three hits to lead the Mariners past Foothills Christian, and take home the Sweetwater Invitational Championship.
Barquin also was the winning pitcher, racking up five strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Trevor Rector and Devon King pitched the final 2.2 innings to close the game out in relief.
The Mariners were active on the basepaths all day as they collected 14 hits. Along with Barquin’s three hits, Ryan Lee, Joshua Barbato, Dante Pacheco, and King also had two hits a piece.
After a back and forth battle through the first three innings, Mar Vista exploded for five runs in the fourth inning to take the lead for good. Along with RBIs by Lee and Barquin, the inning was capped by a 2-run inside the park homerun by the speedy Ryan Bell. The offensive explosion helped to avenge an earlier tournament loss to Foothills Christian.
The Mariners made it to the championship game by compiling a 4-1 record in the round robin portion of the tournament. In the opener, Rector, King, and Barquin combined to throw a no-hitter in a win against Hoover. Following a loss against Foothills Christian, Mar Vista bounced back and took a forfeit victory against El Cajon Valley, and then scored 10 runs in victories against Mount Miguel and Morse. Bell, Barquin, King and Rector all gathered multiple hits in each of those victories. Barbato was the winning pitcher and knocked in four runs in the win against Morse.
The Mar Vista Mariners are currently sitting at 4 wins and 4 losses on the young season, and start game play in the GMC Tournament this week.
