Here’s the update on the varsity spring sports at Mar Vista High as we come to the end of the season and CIF playoffs.

Girls Lacrosse: The Lady Mariners have clinched a share of the South Bay League Title with a win against Castle Park on Monday, April 29. With a win against Chula Vista or Montgomery, Coach Shizuka Baker will bring the first Girls Lacrosse championship to Mar Vista in school history. They are currently 11-6, 8-0 in South Bay League Play, and will be an automatic entry with a home game into the CIF Playoffs. Some standouts include senior Aurora Santillian, with 37 goals, juniors Kassandra Lasala, with 42 goals and 5 assists, and Ericka Rodriguez, with 34 goals and 8 assists. Congratulation to the Girls for their great efforts this season.

Boys Volleyball: The Mariners finished the season with a 3-0 victory against Southwest to finish 4-19. Led by senior All League Performer Chris Nichols and newcomer Ethan Hastings, the Mariners were able to squeeze into the Division IV Playoffs as a 10-seed and played the School of Entrepreneurship and Technology on May 1, (score not available at press time). Congrats on a playoff berth for the second year in a row.

Swim & Dive: The Boys and Girls both finished 5-4 overall and had a strong performance in a tough Mesa League. Some outstanding performers in the Mesa League Championships included: third place 400 Girls Relays (season record) for Kayla Quinones, Melanie Clamp, Christine Sigle, and Iliana Lopez; third place 400 Boys relay (season record): Charles Bowlby, Jack Hinzo, Jacob Patton and TC Spaulding; top individual finishers include: Quinones in the 100M Breast Stroke (fourth), Isaac Suarez in the 100M Breast Stroke (fourth), Sigle 100M Back Stroke and 100M Butterfly (fifth), Jake Osthimer in the 100 Back Stroke (fifth), and Jack Hinzo in the 100M Breast Stroke (fifth).

Softball: Last week, Coach Tracey Garcia was awarded as the San Diego Padres Coach of the week. The softball program will receive $1,000 and and a story was run on Fox Sports News last Sunday. Currently the Mariners are 16-5, 7-1 in League and will be continuing league play against Castle Park and Sweetwater this week. Leading the way on offense for the Lady Mariners are Lexi Tubman (.591 BA and 26 Hits & 17 RBI’s) along with Bryanna Schaffer (.386, 14 Runs, 14 RBI’s). Leading the way pitching is Abi Rivera with a 1.49 ERA and a 6-1 Record. They currently sit as the 3-seed in the Division III playoffs.

Baseball: Coach Bobby Rector currently has the Mariners sitting at 11-12, 2-4 in South Bay League play. They will take on the Southwest Raiders this week on Wednesday and Friday. Several years ago, baseball went to playing the same opponent twice in a week so each team would not always see their “Ace.” Leading the team of offense is Josh Barbato (.338, 24 hits,13 RBIs), Chris Paridnas (.328, 19 hits) and Diego Garza (.318, 11 RBI’s). Leading the way on defense for the Mariner are: Barbato (3-2, 1.28 ERA), Graza (2-2, 3.17 ERA), Pardinas (3-5, 2.68 ERA), and Cesar Luna (1-1, 2.47 ERA). The Mariners are currently sitting as the seventh seed in Division IV.

Boys Golf: The Mariners finished 3-7 but had a strong showing in the South Bay League Finals (prelims were played at the Bonita Golf Course and Finals were played at the Chula Vista Golf Course). First Team All-South Bay League performers include seniors Jesse Ibarra and Kyle Hara. On Second Team All-League Members include seniors Alex Gutierrez and Marcelino Maclang.

Boys Tennis: First year Coach Scott Guthrie finished with a 4-10 record, 4-6 in South Bay League play, and qualified for the Division III CIF Team Playoffs as a 12 seed against Madison High School, (score unavailable at press time). In addition, at the South Bay League Tournament, the Mariners had two doubles teams qualify for the CIF Individual Tournament: Gerardo Castro and Allan Borinaga, along with David Zepeda and Armando Garcia.

Boys Lacrosse: Third year coach Jake Crose currently has the Mariners sitting at 6-10, 3-2 overall in League. They are currently in second place in the South Bay League behind Olympian High School. Juniors Levi Lord and Paul Fieweger lead the team in scoring, 26 and 16 goals respectively, and junior Blake Baxter has continuously improved at goalie this year. Their final two games this week are against Chula Vista on Wednesday, (score unavailable at press time), and Monte Vista on Friday (both away).

Gymnastics: Longtime Coach Ron Mazer runs the gymnastics program as an entire conference (as opposed to an individual school). The two Mariners competing on the varsity level are senior Lisette Soto and junior Mary Cincotta. Their final meet is Thursday at Poway High School against Mt. Carmel and both ladies look to compete in the Avocado League Finals on May 10 at Mount Carmel and CIF Finals on May 17 at La Costa Canyon.

Track & Field: Led by longtime coach and Mariner Alum Alton Colter, the Mariners finished 3-3 in League Dual Meets and will compete in the South Bay League Prelims and Finals on Tuesday and Thursday. Top performers on for the Girls include: sophomore Briana Ayala (100/200/Relays) and Anastasia Henderson (Hurdles and Relays). Top performers on the Boys side includes: junior Pete Flores (400/Relays) and senior Marcus Ramirez (100/200/Long Jump/4x100 Relay).
