Last week’s story, (“Punta Bandera Is Major Source of Pollution,” April 25, page 3), about the pollution movement along the coast was not clear about contribution and extent of the Punta Bandera pollution. While both the Tijuana River and Punta Bandera appear to be important sources of pollution to Imperial Beach, the relative importance of each is currently being examined by scientists at Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Even though the Punta Bandera source is further away from Imperial Beach, it enters at a higher concentration of pollutants and can be transported northwards during strong south swells. The Tijuana River remains a concern whenever there is heavy rain and sewage bypasses the treatment facility.

Scripps scientists are running updated simulations now which will eventually answer this question more directly, but current research suggest that Punta Bandera could indeed be important during certain conditions, (strong south swell, particularly with no rainfall).
