Congressman Juan Vargas represents the 51st Congressional District that includes Imperial Beach. The following website submission was sent to him in early April. No answer has been received.

Message Subject: Congressional Request for Tax Returns
Message Text:

Congressman Vargas: In this week’s news one of the primary items was the House majority’s demand for President Trump’s tax returns for several years. I am curious as to the reason for this request. The president was elected without providing his tax returns. To my knowledge there has been no information that he failed to file or there was fraudulent returns as the IRS under the previous administrations would certainly have taken him to court.

So what is driving this additional distraction from the people’s business - like fixing our infrastructure; fixing the immigration system; addressing the decline in our conventional military capabilities; the massive national debt, etc.? I remain puzzled as to the workings of the Congress.

Also, do you and other members of Congress provide your tax returns for public scrutiny? I know that I would not want to as my finances are a matter of personal privacy and I think most Americans feel the same way.

Since submitting my query to Congressman Vargas, the House of Representatives has demanded the Treasury Department turn over President Trump’s federal tax returns for the past five years. This is not required by law. Only during the past 40 years have president’s voluntarily released parts or all of their tax returns.

Congressman Vargas’s constituents deserve an answer as to the legitimate legislative purpose for seeking private data from the President.
