After reading Mark Williams letter in the Eagle & Times, (Feb 9-15 2023) I felt compelled to respond. I did my own research and found, like Mark, that a lot of money for the mayoral campaign of Paloma Aguirre did, indeed come not only from unions based outside of our little city, but from individuals and other candidates outside of California as well. Big time dollars were funneled through ActBlue, a 501c3 non-profit, software based company, located in Massachusetts, who has an on-line fundraising platform that supports Democratic candidates, committees and progressive organizations at all levels. This puts the average citizen who desires to run for office in this town at a huge disadvantage. Campaign finance reform is long overdue in Imperial Beach. It is time to level the playing field and by doing so, give everyone who desires to run for public office a fighting chance. Let’s make it happen.
