Joyce Marie Chambers Milam

Joyce Marie Chambers Milam, of Grass Valley, formerly of Imperial Beach, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2020.

Joyce Brit was born in Childress, Texas, on Jan. 21, 1939, and was raised in Adel, Iowa. Her family relocated to San Diego when she was a teenager.

After losing her first husband, Harlan Chambers, Sr., in 1966, to the effects of the Vietnam War, she became active in the military community helping the local VFW and American Legion posts in Imperial Beach. In 1977, she married Donald Milam. For many years, Joyce was a staple in Imperial Beach where she owned the High Chaparral Saloon.

After Don’s passing, Joyce moved with her son, Michael Chambers and his wife, Sandra, to Paradise. The family survived, but lost everything in the tragic Camp Fire in Northern California’s Butte County in 2018. Afterwards, they settled in Grass Valley.

Joyce is survived by her son, Michael (Sandra); daughters Kristene (Allan) Opitz, and Katherine (Jeffrey) Williams; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren; brothers James Birt, Gerald Birt, Joseph Birt; a sister Judith Crowe.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Harlan Chambers Sr., and Donald Milam; son Harlan Chambers Jr., daughter, Kelly Espinosa (nee Chambers); and her beloved dog, a pug named Abby.

In lieu of a memorial service and flowers, the family is asking for donations in honor of Joyce to your local VFW or American Legion posts.
