Eugene “Gene” Walston passed from this life on March 19, 2022 in Murrieta, California, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Gene was born on Jan. 30, 1933 in Los Angeles. He was the middle of nine children born to Thomas and Lillian Walston. He moved with his family to Imperial Beach when he was three years old. Gene attended Mar Vista High School where his favorite subject was agriculture.
Gene joined the Marines during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge, he was employed by the City of Coronado as a groundskeeper for the Parks Department. He retired from the City in 1989, but continued to serve private landscaping clients in Coronado for another 24 years. He concurrently served as a reserve sheriff for San Diego County for a total of 35 years.
Gene and his wife, Charlotte, raised a son, Jim, and a daughter, Cheryl, in Imperial Beach.
Following his divorce from Charlotte in 1994, Gene married Barbara “Bobbie” Kerbey of Coronado in 1996. Barbara succumbed to cancer in 2005. Gene met Sara Cruce of Point Loma and they were married in July, 2007.
Gene and Sara retired to Idyllwild just before his 80th birthday in 2012. They loved their cabin in the pines. However, a record breaking cold winter prompted them to move down from The Hill in 2016. They spent two years in San Jacinto, finally landing in Murrieta in August of 2018.
Working outside came naturally for Gene. Fishing in the Eastern Sierras was a favorite vacation spot all his life. He never met a dog he didn’t like, or one who didn’t like him! His rescues, cocker spaniel Dani Girl and tuxedo Mommy Kitty really miss him.
Gene is survived by his wife Sara; children, Jim (Cheryl) Walston of Star, Idaho and Cheryl (Carl) Dollick of Wasilla, Alaska; nine grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; sisters Julia Rolf of Imperial Beach and Nola MClenachen of La Connor, Washington.
A graveside service, with full military honors, will be held at Miramar National Cemetery, 5795 Nobel Drive, on Thursday, April 21 at 1:30 p.m.
