Ruth Francis Cartier, a longtime resident of Imperial Beach, died peacefully on Aug. 14, 2017 surrounded by her family and loved ones.
Born in 1925 in Lynn, Massachusetts to Irish immigrant parents Elizabeth and Thomas Gill, Ruth was the second of seven children. She attended Sacred Heart Catholic School and was a graduate of Lynn Classical High School class of 1943.
She was employed by the FBI as a fingerprint examiner before enlisting in the U.S. Navy where she met her husband Warner Armand Cartier.
Ruth’s many achievements and titles included Miss Navy Wife 1964, President of the House of Ireland, Pop Warner Mom, Imperial Beach Bobby Sox, International Girls Softball, and Imperial Beach Parks and Recreation. Ruth was employed as an Imperial Beach city code enforcement officer and served as a senior volunteer for the Sheriff’s Department.
Ruth was a loving wife and mother of eight children. She is predeceased by her husband Warner; her son Michael Cartier; grandchild Hillary Halling; and brother Thomas Gill. Ruth leaves behind her children Paddy (Mike Magee) Cartier, Kathleen Cartier (Charles) Worley, Shannon (George) Sager, Colleen (James) Halling, Kerry Cartier, Casey Cartier, and Bridget Cartier; 18 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and siblings, Mary Gaffney, Claire Collier, Rita Potter, Peggy Moran and Patsy Kelly; and sister in law Eleanor Gill.
An Irish celebration of her life will be held on Friday, Aug.18, at 10 a.m. at La Vista Cemetery 3191 Orange Street National City CA 91950, 619- 475-7770.
