Imperial Beach has always been a familiar place for the new Mar Vista High School football coach. Although he grew up in Bonita, Tyler Arciaga spent his summers in Imperial Beach. He recently bought a house a few blocks from MVHS with his wife Heidi.

Arciaga is the new head football coach at MVHS. In addition to being the football coach he will be teaching physical education, economics and geometry.

He previously was a football coach at San Ysidro High School where he also taught math and economics. Arciaga is following in his parents’ footsteps. “Both of my parents taught in the district. They opened Southwest High School in Nestor ... in the 70s,” said Arciaga. His dad taught Spanish and physical education and was head football coach from 1978 to 1981. His mother taught math and physical education and was the tennis coach. They are now both retired.

The new coach is excited about being at MVHS. “The program has been doing well. My goal is to try to keep the program on track. The previous coach [Brian Hay] did well with the program... want to keep the same direction maybe change the offense a little bit,” said Arciaga. “The kids have had core values instilled in them by the coach and parents with a good work ethic and willingness to learn. It’s a good transition.”

Arciaga, 30, didn’t start his career as a teacher. After graduating from Bonita Vista High School where he played football as a quarterback. He received a football scholarship from the University of Nevada Las Vegas and played as a backup quarterback for three seasons. The last two years he transferred to Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut where he also played football. After graduation he stayed in Connecticut and worked as an investment accounting software project manager and consultant. He holds a business degree form UNLV and an MBA from Sacred Heart University. “I was able to do my job remotely from home so I moved back to San Diego and started coaching in 2010 at Bonita Vista High School,” he said. While there he met his future wife who was also a teacher at the school. “I saw the life she lived as a teacher and thought it would be good for both of us,” he said. The couple married two years ago.

Arciaga spent a year in Vienna, Austria playing football in the local professional team. While he lived in Austria he had a chance to travel around Europe. “It was fun ... fantastic,” he said of his experience. “It was great while it lasted.”

In the last month, Arciaga has been teaching summer school and leading morning workouts for the players at 6 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a combination of lifting and conditioning. On Tuesdays and Thursdays the team does scrimmages with other schools.

The first day of practice for the season is August 1 and the first game will be played August 30 at Valley Center. Homecoming is scheduled for September 6.

“It’s exciting to work and coach in the community you live in,” he said.
