What do you see as the three most important (long term or short term) issues facing the City of Imperial Beach?

The crime being committed against us in the Tijuana River Valley, on our beaches, and in our water. There is no question that it should hold the title as the most important issue facing Imperial Beach. Short and long term alike.

Children coming down with disease, our namesake beach being closed the majority of the year… We have worked tirelessly to solve it and still have a ways to go, but if this crisis isn’t at the top of our elected hopeful’s lists, reevaluate your candidate. It should be primetime news across the country every day.

Second to that, in both a short and long-term fashion, we must focus on recovery. Recovery from the crushing pains of the COVID-19 pandemic. This recovery will look different from different perspectives in IB. On one hand, we must continue to protect our most vulnerable from eviction and supply resources to the unemployed. On the other, we must foster a streamlined and attractive business culture, one that helps keep our shops open and bring new ones into the city.

The City’s responsibility is to the people they serve, and by rising the tides of commerce and community, we will certainly lift all boats.

Lastly, we must address the threat of an identity shift in IB. What do I mean by that? I hope you, the voter, have been following our Regional Housing debacle at SANDAG. If not, then in summary, we are being commanded to build high density highrises along major city corridors. These will radically alter the course of our city, and quickly erase the quiet beachtown atmosphere we love.

What can we do about it? Depends who you vote for. Pay close attention to their positions on housing. Personally, I intend to fight tooth and nail against this flawed order. Growth must be responsibly and reasonably done. This is neither.

Finally, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the Eagle & Times for graciously providing us candidates the venue to share our ideas and concerns with the community.

As this is our last week, I think it’s also appropriate to mention what an honor it is to represent the many generations of my family, who love this City like I do. I only hope to serve them, and you, with honor and integrity.

Have a great holiday weekend, be sure to vote, and be true to yourselves IB! May God bless us all.
