South Bay Union School District Superintendent Dr. Katie McNamara has announced her retirement effective Nov. 2, 2021. McNamara has served as the District’s Superintendent since July 2013. She informed the Board and shared the news during the regularly scheduled Board Meeting on May 27, 2021.

In 2018, McNamara was named Superintendent of the Year by the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA) for San Diego and Imperial Counties. She has held key leadership positions on several education-related organizations including the Association of California School Administrators, as the President of the State Superintendency Council and Vice President of Legislative Action. She testified on education legislation before the California Senate Education Committee and is an active member of the California School Boards Association. McNamara has presented at national, state, and local conferences on various topics, including Board/Superintendent Relationships, Equity, Sponsorship and Mentorship of Women in Leadership, Student Achievement and Whole System Reform, California state politics and the financial impact on school districts, Instructional Technology, and K-12 online professional development.

In a letter to families, McNamara stated:

“I want to express my sincere gratitude for our work that has honored the District mission statement, “We are a purposeful community committed to the academic and social success of ALL students.” I cherish so many of my relationships, both inside and outside of our organization and in our community. Honoring ALL students has meant celebrating each and every one of our students, seeing their cultural and linguistic differences as beautiful assets.

“I want to thank everyone who has helped us deliver on the promise to provide a rigorous and engaging academic experience for each and every student. We have made enormous progress in the last eight years. When I was hired in 2013, the Board of Trustees had a vision that we would provide choice for our families. I am extremely proud that we added a Dual Immersion school, a STEAM Academy at Bayside, the Emory Academy for Global Leadership and Empowerment, the Leader in Me Program at Oneonta and Nicoloff, and we built an award winning brand new campus for our Preschool students.

“Please accept my bestwishes for the enduring success of our District in our phenomenal community. It has been an absolute honor and privilege to serve in this very special position.”

The Board of Trustees will announce details of the search process in the coming weeks.
