Skateboarding will make its Olympic debut at the 2020 Summer games in Tokyo.

Meanwhile in Imperial Beach the “Unofficial Skate Crew of Oneonta Elementary School” takes to the streets almost everyday to practice.

Oneonta sixth grader Logan Hanson is the unofficial leader of the group “I buy all the snacks,” he boasted, but he takes teaching the others to perfect tricks seriously.

“My favorite trick is called a ‘Nose grab,’” said Hanson, “you need to be able to ‘Ollie’ high and have quick thinking. Let me introduce the group.”

“Braeden is our photographer. He’s also in my class and his favorite sport is dirt biking and his best trick on a bike is a ‘Tailwhip.’

“Sebastian is also in sixth grade. He’s our fastest learner. Right after learning to balance on a board he was almost as fast as me.

“Daniel is in fourth grade. He loves video games, but loves skating more.

Antonio is a seventh grader and the newest to the group. He’s the oldest and funniest.

“Miguel is a sixth grader and kinda like the dad of the group. He is the calmest of us and willing to go get stuff when we need it.”

Older kids at the IB Skatepark have not always been welcoming, so these kids have a few favorite skate spots close to their homes.
