The Imperial Beach Athletic Club (IBAC) is taking reservations now for their popular IBAC Cornhole on the Beach Tournament coming up on the weekend of Aug. 21-22. With a pass on last year’s games due to COVID, this will be the third year for this fundraising event.
“[Tournaments} like Cornhole are our opportunities to raise funds to give back to the community,” said Eric Gutierrez, current president of IBAC.
In the past, the IBAC has donated more than $9000 to the Imperial Beach, youth sports, and events, brought hot lunches to the Sheriff’s and Fire departments, city workers, and the Port District to name a few, given bikes away to youth and much more. “These events, [cornhole tournament, golf tournament, horseshoe tournament and more], give us the funds to do that,” said Gutierrez.
The adult tournament will be held on Saturday, Aug. 21 and reservations are requested. Sign ups are at the Plank this Saturday, Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon or sign up anytime via Venmo. The tournament is located at the end of Dahlia Street, in the sand on the beach. The cost is $30 per player and participant drink specials will be available at the Plank. They can take up to 128 players.
The tournament is a blind draw/double elimination and there are prizes for first, second and third places. Raffle prizes and a 50/50 raffle will also be available. “We are hoping to get more sign ups for adults in the next two weeks,” said Gutierrez. A full tournament is the goal.
For the kids portion of the tournament on Sunday, Aug. 22, registration is done just the day of the event, beginning at 8 a.m. in the same location, the beach at the end of Dahlia Street. They accept the first 64 kids, ages 7-17, and play begins at 10 a.m. There will be raffle prizes and free lunch for the kids, (pizza and juice boxes), and each entrant gets a prize.
For businesses, sponsorships and prize donations are greatly appreciated.
“Every year, this event builds and builds and is better than the year before,” said Gutierrez.
