Walmart held its grand reopening last Friday, July 27 with a big celebration. The event started at 7 a.m. and a large crowd formed outside as employees, customers and managers from other stores listened to the National Anthem sang by Rebecca Jade. The store’s General Manager Mytrell Foreman praised the employees on stage set up by the side entrance and then called the managers to the front of the crowd and spoke about them one by one.

He also mentioned the associates. “There have never been associates like these. They do whatever needs to be done…they are dedicated, loyal and do whatever it takes to make the store run smoothly,” he said. “This store is small but mighty.”

Foreman gave out $1,000 checks, one on behalf of Walmart to Nice Guys, a charitable organization in San Diego; another to the Imperial Beach Senior Center which councilman Mark West accepted on their behalf and another to the City of Imperial Beach to aid with Symphony by the Sea. The Montgomery High School Mariachi band also received a $1,000 check. The band provided the music inside the store while a DJ played music outside.

Cupcakes, goodie bags were given to customers as they came in and raffles were held throughout the day.

The store has received some upgrades including new signage overhead to guide customers, and separation between areas. More changes include fitting rooms, self check out cash registers and a new pick up feature for customers who order online with no minimum order required. Another change is that the fresh fruits and vegetable stand is no longer available.

Lupita Amesquita, personnel coordinator said the electronics section has been expanded and features more display cases for customers to get a better experience. A larger variety of merchandise is also available in that section.

“It’s been open five years and it was time to update,” said Amesquita. Although sections have stayed in the same spot where they were before, merchandise has been rearranged. The remodel took three months to complete. “We did a little bit at a time, the bulk of the work was done at night,” she said.

Amesquita said the employees were going to celebrate with a cookout in the back. “Everybody is happy with the changes, it was stressful but we did it,” she said.

Customer Crystal Rico had no idea that the grand opening was happening when she went into the store. She was surprised to find a party atmosphere. She had noticed overtime that the store was being remodeled.

The store which sells everything from clothing to pet food to school supplies and frozen foods also features a pharmacy and photo center.
