On Dec. 5, 2015 the Bayside School robotics team, Team W.I.R.E. (Wiring, Inquiring, Robotics, Engineers) competed in their first Arduino Robot Challenge at the STEAM Maker Festival at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The challenge asked the students to design, create and program a robot to follow a line that not only curved and changed direction, but reduced in width as well. Out of the three heats, and against about fifteen teams comprised of elementary, middle and high school students from around San Diego County, Team W.I.R.E. placed third.

Bayside School also sent two fifth grade teams to compete in the Recycled Fashion Show at the Maker Fest. The teams had two hours to plan and construct an outfit and then present their creation in front of a large audience. Both teams earned a trophy for “Best Use of Cardboard.”

“We are very proud of our students!” said Bayside Principal Kevin Coordt. “The success of our robot is a direct result of the hard work, perseverance and dedication of the entire team, including our talented students and fantastic robotics coach, Ms. Pelloth.”

The STEAM Maker Festival is an annual San Diego event designed to bridge the gap between school based STEAM programs and the MAKER Movement. The Festival is a gathering of tech enthusiasts, crafters, educators, tinkerers, hobbyists, engineers, science clubs, authors, artists, students and commercial exhibitors. The San Diego STEAM Maker festival combines a maker expo with S.T.E.A.M. Education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) to create a unique educational festival for kids and adults alike.
