It’s unlike any other physical therapy office. It’s bright, airy and features blue, grey and white tones. Everyone is friendly and welcoming and that’s how owner Todd Sparks wants the clinic to feel.

Sparks, who grew up in Massachusetts, spent a lot of time in a physical therapy office. His mom was a physical therapist for 40 years and owned a number of clinics.

When it was time to chose a career Sparks knew two things.“I’ve always been interested in sports and exercise and liked working with my hands,” he said. His choice was easy to make.

After working as a physical therapist for 12 years he decided to strike it on his own and open an office in Otay Ranch in 2017.

“After working in physical therapy as an employee the quality of care was not what I thought it should be and decided to open my own practice,” he explained. That practice grew fast and was successful, and through word of mouth the excellent reputation of the clinic spread rapidly from patients to co-workers and family members.

When Spark thought of opening a second location, Imperial Beach came to mind. He and his wife have spent some time in the city often having dinner at local restaurants and going to the beach. “This is a wonderful place,” he said of the town.

This past September he opened his second Performance Plus Physical Therapy clinic located in the Silver Strand Plaza in the former location of IB Fitness, which has moved a few doors down. The feel of the clinic is welcoming and the radio always plays the Oldies. “We are very family oriented. We’re professional but we’re fun,” he said about himself and his employees, who go the extra mile to be friendly to the patients

The new office is 1,500 square feet with a large waiting room which offers coffee and water. “Every patient gets one on one manual physical therapy working on their joints and muscles, exercise and modalities - electrical stimulation and cold or hot packs,” explained Sparks. The practice also offers mechanical traction which is decompression of the spine and cupping.

While in the Otay Ranch office he has hired three doctors of physical therapy, Sparks is the only doctor in Imperial Beach right now. Sparks has a bachelor degree from the University of Rhode Island, a Master’s in Physical Therapy and a doctorate in Physical Therapy from Regis University in Denver. He is assisted by what he calls exercise students who are students who have a kinesiology degree or a degree in an exercise related field who need the hours to go into the physical therapy course of study.

“What sets up apart is the hands on work; we use our hands to work on muscles and joints. We spend a full half hour one-on-one, also with added amounts of energy and attention we give to every patient,” he said.

Patient Ashwant Vinayak was at Performance Plus recently for a knee injury. He lives in Imperial Beach and the first time he went to see Sparks was at the Otay Ranch clinic. When he found out there was a location in IB he was pleasantly surprised. “Todd is great at what he does. He makes me feel comfortable. He has experience. My wife comes here as well. They are all very professional and friendly, focused, you get personal attention,” he said. Vinayak has been a patient at Performance Plus for about two months.

“The clinic’s slogan is ‘Reduce pain and improve mobility and return to the activities you enjoy, pain is no longer an option,’” said Sparks.

Sparks talked about how pain can stop individuals from sleeping well, working and playing with a child or grandchild. “Your life is flipped upside down. Reducing pain will get you back to what you used to do before the injury,” he said.

Performance Plus Physical Therapy accepts most insurance. A free 15 minute discovery session is available to see if the clinic is right for you.
