Dan McAllister, San Diego County Treasurer- Tax Collector, was the featured speaker at the Chamber’s monthly networking breakfast at the Dempsey Holder Center on May 23 at 7:15 a.m.

Valerie Acevez, the Imperial Beach Chamber president, kicked off the meeting and after some brief remarks she introduced McAllister.

San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office collects over $6 billion in property taxes every year and manages the county investment pool of over $11 billion. The Treasury also acts as the paying agent for all of the 42 school districts in the county.

Over 99 percent of all property taxes have been paid on time in recent years, which is up from a low of 94 percent during tougher economic times.

While over 60 percent of people pay their tax bills electronically, the Tax Collector’s office does not have the ability to deliver tax bills electronically. McAllister said they are working to develop electronic billing and have started a trial program this year with a small group of taxpayers.

One program that is not well known allows people over 55 to transfer their existing, lower, property tax cost basis to a new property if the new property didn’t cost more than 10 percent of original property’s selling price. There are other restrictions, but McAllister encourages people who may be eligible to check with his office for more details.

McAllister has served  as the County’s Treasurer-Tax Collector since 2002. He was re-elected to his fifth term in June 2018. He serves as a member of the Boards of Directors for several local organizations including: Jackie Robinson YMCA; Habitat for Humanity, San Diego; and the New Americans Museum, San Diego. He holds a Bachelor’s degree (BA) from California State University, Fresno, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from United States International University.
