Erika Cortez, Imperial Beach Deputy City Manager, was the featured speaker at the Chamber’s monthly networking breakfast at the Dempsey Holder Center on July 25 at 7:15 a.m.

Valerie Acevez, the Imperial Beach Chamber president, kicked off the meeting and after some brief remarks she welcomed Mayor Serge Dedina to the podium.

Dedina emphasized the hard work by all city employees and said that Erika Cortez “exemplifies the spirit of public service.” Cortez oversees the City Clerk’s Office, Human Resources Department, Special Events, Senior Citizens Center, Risk Management and the Administrative Services Finances Department. She started working for the city as an Intern and worked her way up to the position of Deputy City Manager over 20 years.

Cortez’s presentation explained the organization and functions of the various city departments. She highlighted the many ways that city employees have helped the community over the years including volunteering to fill sandbags during recent storms.

She finished her talk by showing a preview of the city’s new website which will go live in the next few months.

Cortez grew up in Imperial Beach and San Ysidro. She earned an Associates Degree in Criminal Justice from Southwestern Community College, Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from DeVry University and is pursuing a Master’s in Public Administration at Southern Utah University.
