Question:

What do you see as the three most important (long term or short term) issues facing the City of Imperial Beach?

Answer:

I live, work and volunteer here in District 4, and witness first-hand how our community continues to be underrepresented on the City Council. I decided to run for Councilmember to be our community’s strongest advocate for fair representation.

When the COVID-19 crisis hit our community, I stepped up to serve on the Mayor’s Task Force, working to keep local workers healthy and employed – and to begin rebuilding of our local economy.

I learned that when our community comes together, we can accomplish a lot.

As Councilmember, you can count on me to lead us to:

1. Recovery From The

Pandemic:

We must make it a priority to keep our neighborhoods safe and healthy, ensure our frontline workers have the resources they need to do their job and help our local small businesses stay open, keeping workers employed.

2. Rebuilding Our Local

Economy:

Bringing our community together, we will work to bring back good paying, balance our city budget and deliver quality neighborhood services.

3. We must address the sewage spills and reach a final resolution:

I will fight to ensure we receive the $300 million in federal funding Mayor Dedina and I, along with a local delegation, fought to secure. I will also explore building treatment plants on our side of the border to treat the water before it reaches the ocean.

As a local community organizer, former US Army Reservist and labor representative, I have the experience to get to work on day one, fighting to deliver results on these issues.

That’s why I’ve earned the support of our community leaders, including Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, Councilmembers Paloma Aguirre and Mark West, the San Diego County Democratic Party, the Imperial Beach Democratic Club, the San Diego County Deputy Sheriff’s and the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council.

As our Councilmember, I will be dedicated to improving the lives and neighborhoods for all of us in Imperial Beach. I hope you will join me.

I will always be on our side. To learn more, please visit Matthew4ibcitycouncil.com.
