You might have noticed this figure out and about round town, in his golf buggy at the McDonald’s drive thru, or getting a Donut at Stardust. You have seen, Ken Hodkinson, author and game designer.
Hodkinson was born in Yorkshire, England, 89 years ago, and now calls Imperial Beach home. He uses the metaphor of a surfer to describe his life. “I caught a wave in my teens and I rode that sucker decade after decade,” he explains. “I got wet from time to time, but I never lost my balance, and the ride ended when I was deposited safely on the beach in California.”
Now that he is here, he wants to bring board gaming to the community by giving away copies of Bin’Fa: The Tao of War, an abstract strategy board game for two up to six players to residents of Imperial Beach. Both a family game (for older children) as well as for serious gamers, Bin’Fa has been compared to Go and Risk. The game is based on the teachings of Sun Tzu, a fourth century BC military strategist.
Bin’Fa incorporates many of the features of actual warfare; armies, supplies, weather, generals, friendly-fire, cavalry charges, and terrain. ... “Bin’Fa is a game that vacillates between moments of absorbed contemplation, frantic action, and jaw dropping disbelief.” - Wargamer Award For Excellence.
With a play time of 20 minutes up to 2 hours, depending on number of players, Bin’Fa’s modular terrain creates an unlimited variation of game set up possibilities. The incorporation of the weather die, vortexes from which army units can suddenly appear, and moving mountain ranges, make for untried and exciting play each and every game.
An educator by trade, Hodkinson is the author of the school text book vocabulary series, “Wordly Wise,” now in its 55th year, and “The Reading Game,” which has been called “a vaccine against illiteracy.”
If you are interested in board games, go to www.bin-fa.com to learn more. If you like it, Hodkinson has good news for you. He will give you, no strings attached, a signed copy of Bin’Fa. This offer applies only to residents of Imperial Beach. If you are interested in a game and/or a monthly meet up for board gaming at the picnic tables at the pier, please email email@example.com.
