Local Restaurant Owner Speaks Out In Support Of Plastic Ban

Bethany Case, owner of the Red House Kitchen restaurant, spoke in favor of the city ordinance expanding the plastic ban during the city council meeting Wednesday evening, May 1. She joined 11 other citizens who all spoke in favor, but Case was the only restaurant owner to take the floor in support. No one spoke in opposition.

The ordinance would expand the previously enacted plastic ban to prohibit any food service containers that are not biodegradable, compostable or recyclable as well as plastic straws, stirrers and utensils. 

Case explained to the councilmembers, that while it costs a little extra to be plastic free, (plastic bags cost 3 cents each as compared to 12 cents each for paper bags), the benefit to the environment is worth the extra expense. She held up a paper water carton that she sells instead of plastic water bottles to demonstrate some of the alternatives that are available. 

The ordinance passed unanimously and will take effect Nov 15, 2019.

Case was a music teacher in various San Diego county schools for over 10 years until she took advantage of an opportunity to open the Red House Kitchen in 2017. She enjoys the challenges of running her own business and it provides opportunities for her to contribute to the local community and an improved work/life balance.

Case’s Red House Kitchen is one of only four Ocean Friendly Restaurants, certified by Surfrider Foundation, in Imperial Beach and the only one at the Platinum Level. The other Ocean Friendly restaurants are: Coronado Brewing Company, SEA180º and the Siam Imperial Thai Kitchen. Ocean Friendly restaurants are required to follow the following five criteria:

• No expanded polystyrene use, aka Styrofoam.

• Proper recycling practices are followed.

• Only reusable tableware is used for onsite dining, and disposable utensils for takeout food are provided only upon request.

• No plastic bags offered for takeout or to-go orders.

• Straws are provided only upon request.

They also must follow at least two of the following six criteria:

• No beverages sold in plastic bottles.

• Discount is offered for customers with reusable cup, mug, bag, etc.

• Vegetarian/vegan food options are offered on a regular basis

• All seafood must be a ‘Best Choice’ or ‘Good Alternative’ as defined by Seafood Watch or certified as sustainable.

• Water conservation efforts, such as low-flow faucets and toilets, are implemented.

• Energy efficiency efforts such as LED lighting and Energy Star appliances, are in place.

Restaurants that follow all the above criteria are recognized as Platinum Ocean Friendly Restaurants.

The Red House Kitchen is located on the corner of 13th Street and Donax Avenue and is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
