Following changes to state requirements, Transitional Kindergarten is expanding to serve additional students in the South Bay Union School District. As part of the program, all 4-year-old students will be eligible for Universal Transitional Kindergarten by the 2024-2025 school year.

The phase for the 2022-2023 school year will include students who have fifth birthdays between September 2 and February 2. This will open up classes to those with December and January birthdays.

Currently eight of the South Bay campuses have Transitional Kindergarten, receiving students from all district schools, according to Pamela Reichert-Montiel, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Leadership. She also indicated that with the increased enrollment, it is the District’s hope to offer Transitional Kindergarten at additional sites.

The phase for next year includes the requirement that the adult-to-student ratio in the Transitional Kindergarten classrooms increase from approximately 1:24 to 1:12. The District will be hiring Instructional Assistants to support certificated staff.

Ms. Reichert-Montiel said, “South Bay is excited to offer this expanded program to our community and hope that we can spread the word, as it can be challenging reaching families of incoming students.” More information on Transitional Kindergarten and enrollment is available on the District Website ( Families may also contact their school of residence with any questions.
