A house fire Friday morning, June 14, led to the rescue of 19 animals in a case where pets appeared to be hoarded.

Firefighters responded to a call about a house fire in the 1200 block of 11th Street in Imperial Beach. Fire engines from Imperial Beach, National City and San Diego arrived on scene and their crews fought the blaze from the alley between 11th Street and Florida Street.

The cause of the fire, which started at about 6:30 a.m. has not been determined but firefighters at the scene credit a neighbor who smelled burning plastic and saw smoke rising from the home for immediately calling 911 for their quick response.

Firefighters called The San Diego Humane Society to assist with animals found in the home. Humane Society officers responding found and removed nineteen animals including two ferrets, two chinchillas, five gerbils and five hedgehogs, all of which they reported to be unharmed by the fire.

The five dogs evacuated from the house during the fire were reunited with their owners, a mother and adult daughter, but the other animals according to the officers are illegal to own in the state of California and were seized.
