Like so many other programs and events in the last few months, Tijuana River National Estuarine Reserve planned this year’s volunteer appreciation as a virtual party and happy hour celebration. The annual celebration is usually held in the spring while outdoors at the Visitor Center, but this has not been a typical year. Although the trails have remained open, and some staff are working on site, the volunteers have not been allowed to come back just yet. Seeing their faces (even on screen) and hearing how they’re spending their time brought smiles to everyone who logged in for this fun, virtual gathering.
Tijuana Estuary is lucky to have a group of very dedicated long-term volunteers who are part of the TRNERR family. This year, Volunteer Coordinator, Robin Echols-Booth, applied for several California State Park Volunteer Poppy Awards. These awards are given to volunteers for many years of outstanding service.
It was an honor to give Poppy Awards to Joan Brooks, Dick Pilgrim, John Zarem, and Kevin Hamm.
Also celebrated were other standout volunteers Ron Peterson, Demmuel Eslava, Jan Corbett, Leslie Bassett, Anne Pilgrim, Dave Dunlevy and Dely Judal.
