Representatives from Camp Surf, Steve Morris, director of Development and Alumni Relations and Keith Fargo, board member, were the featured speakers at the Chamber’s monthly networking breakfast at the Dempsey Holder Center on June 27 at 7:15 a.m.

Valerie Acevez, the Imperial Beach Chamber president, kicked off the meeting and announced that the Chamber will be publishing a city map for tourists that highlights local businesses. Local businesses that would like to be included should contact the Chamber of Commerce. After some other brief remarks, she introduced Steve Morris from Camp SURF.

Morris opened the presentation by noting that the San Diego County YMCA association is the largest in the country with 18 branches with one of the branches dedicated to camping. The three campgrounds in this branch are: Camp Marston, Camp Raintree and Camp SURF.

Camp Surf is located on the northern edge of the city along the ocean and has accommodations for 180 campers with a dining hall that can serve 300 people. They offer a variety of activities including arts and crafts, archery a climbing tower and of course surfing!

After Morris’s opening remarks, Keith Fargo, explained that his father, a Navy Captain in 1969, spearheaded the creation of Camp SURF and the transition from US Navy control to the YMCA. The original name of the campground was the San Diego Unified Recreation Facility (SURF) but was immediately shortened to Camp Surf.

In 1997, the YMCA was awarded a 50-year lease to operated Camp Surf by an Act of Congress.

Camp SURF offers weekend programs for families and weeklong overnight camping experiences for school aged children from all over the country. Weeklong Camping is reserved for organized groups and individual children but families can take advantage of the weekend program from Friday thru Sunday which is offered 6-7 times a year.

While overnight camping is Camp Surf’s specialty, they also offer a nine week day camp program during the summer.

They sponsor two public events each year: a Halloween party every Halloween and a community open house the first Sunday in May each year .

Camp Surf is celebrating its 50th anniversary Nov. 2 this year. They will dedicate a flagpole and host a gala with food, adult beverages and live entertainment. Contact Steve Morris if you are interested in attending the 50th anniversary gala, sponsoring a table or other sponsorship opportunities.
