Dance or listen to the music of Kicks, a variety dance band that will be performing at the Cinco de Mayo hosted by Friends of Children United Society (FOCUS) on Sunday, May 5 from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Nautilus Room, Coronado Community Center, 1845 Strand Way.

FOCUS supports children in need. Whether it be the homeless, foster children, children with learning disabilities, FOCUS raises money to give back to organizations that support their cause, helping children of all ages and for the betterment of battered, abused, disabled, and disadvantaged children in San Diego County. Having been in existence since the early 1980s, members continue to raise funds, buy needed items, and deliver directly to the youth, or to agencies that provide help to San Diego adolescents.

Kicks was founded in the 1980s by vocalist/keyboard/bassist Gary Hartson. Kicks plays everything from ballads, jazz, latin, as well as music from the 40s, 50s and 60s, 70s and 80s, to present popular hit music. Kicks is a multi-sized group from two to 12 pieces. The full-size group, which will be performing in Coronado, features two female vocalists and a live horn section. Six out of the 12 band members are outstanding lead vocalists, which makes for incredibly great harmonies.

Kicks repertoire of the favorites from the mid-twentieth century includes such hits as:

“In the Mood,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Zoot Suit Riot,” “Take The A Train,” “Jump Jive and Wail,” “Kansas City,” “Mack the Knife,” “New York New York,” “Night Train,” “Satin Doll,” “Summer Wind,” “All of Me,” “Fly Me To the Moon,” “You Send Me.”

The variety dance band Kicks has performed at over 1,000 events for some of the largest companies and organizations in San Diego and around the world. For years, top event planners have booked Kicks with full confidence, knowing that their entertainment needs will be handled by the best professionals in the business. FOCUS selected Kicks because it wanted to give its supporters the best musical entertainment it could find. The search ended with Kicks, a band that produces a mixture of popular instrumentals, and popular vocal tunes of our times.

Not only will there be music, but a live auction and an on-line auction. The on-line auction will feature exotic travel destinations, unique gifts and experiences, sports, artwork, entertainment, and items many of the local Coronado businesses have contributed. It is the event of the year for FOCUS. A gala night of festivities, all of which benefits the children in need of San Diego County.

If that is not enough entertainment for an evening, individuals will be fed a gourmet dinner served by Crown Point Catering. Tickets, details, and register to bid at
