For years, customers to the Ye Olde Plank Inn in Imperial Beach, have been attaching dollar bills to the palapa over the bar. The area was quite literally covered in dollar bills, and it was famous for it.
But earlier last month, employees of the neighborhood landmark began the arduous task of removing the bills in order to use the money to fund a food distribution event as the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have local families finding it increasingly difficult to obtain the food they need. When they finished they had well over $2,500 and the bar owners donated an additional $1,500 for the community event.
On Friday, May 8, volunteers arranged 200 bags of food outside the bar and local families in need were invited to collect one. After the event the Ye Olde Plank Inn posted on their Facebook page: “We would like to thank Linda Gomez, Nichole Reinsch, Jay Carey, Miles Mattes, Vanessa Mattes and John Perno for assisting in making the Ye Olde Plank Inn Food Distribution a smashing success. Would also like to thank Imperial Beach Council Member Mark West and Marc from the Imperial Beach Grocery Outlet for supporting the event.”
