Nestled in between Starbucks and Coronado Taste of Oils on Orange Avenue is a little gem that was flooded with happy customers from all over San Diego this last Labor Day Weekend. Villa Nueva Bakery Café is buzzing with all the right things: great atmosphere, great customer service, and, most importantly, delicious food.

As you walk through the front patio and into the cozy café, your eyes are immediately drawn to the enormous wrap around desert cases that are loaded with a wide assortment of house made muffins and pastries. Each day you might find a different array of muffin flavors; their most popular muffins include: apple maple, coconut pineapple, pumpkin, blueberry, chocolate, and banana nut. The aroma of freshly baked goods is irresistible. It takes some serious self-control to resist buying one with your meal especially since they surround the register where you order your food.

Besides the pastries and muffins that are baked fresh everyday, what makes Villa Nueva stand out is that they bring an authentic Mexican Flair to a classic café. Villa Nueva’s breakfast menu includes anything from French toast to bagels and lox to omelets with prices ranging from $9.50 to $11.50. Their Mexican section of the menu is just as enticing and affordable with prices ranging from $7.50 to $10.50 for tacos, enchiladas, chilaquiles, and much more.

When I visited, I ordered the bagel and lox and was pleasantly surprised to find a lightly toasted bagel that was light and airy unlike the dense bagels I find at so many other restaurants. I am definitely coming back for more.

Almost four years ago, Lili Serio and Yolanda Lopez Velarde bought Villa Nueva from Jorge Partida. Serio and Velarde kept the classic menu items but also enhanced it with a light menu and a few other variations giving customers healthy and delicious options.

When asked about her experience with Villa Nueva thus far, Serio exclaimed, “We love the place!” Her favorite part is being part of what has become “the Villa Nueva family.” She loves seeing her regular customers stop by and seeing how happy they are just to be at her restaurant.

Even during the constant flow of customers this last Sunday morning, I was surprised and happy to see every employee wasn’t stressed or overwhelmed but were able handle everything quickly with a smile and a great attitude while also providing great quality food every time.

Villa Nueva has it going on! Whether you are visiting Coronado for the day or if you have been a local for years, this is the place to be for breakfast and lunch. Villa Nueva is located at 956 Orange Avenue and can be reached at 619-435-1256. Open daily from 7 a.m.
