When Angel Benavidez and Michelle Hanson go on vacation they always take advantage of what the place has to offer by renting golf carts, jet skis and other equipment. This past summer the couple decided to bring those amenities to Imperial Beach by opening a business they called Coastal Kruzin Rentals, which rents golf carts, delivering them if necessary. Coastal Kruzin’s logo is “Text or Call…We’ll Cruz to you.”
“We’re different because we deliver,” said Hanson.
The married couple runs the business from their home and delivers the golf carts on a 23 -foot trailer hooked up to their truck to their clients, covering the areas of South Bay, Chula Vista, Coronado and as far north as North Park.
Benavidez and Hanson have day jobs, apart from Coastal Kruzin. Benavidez is a journeyman skillcraft/labor pipe layer with Local 89 and Hanson works at UCSD Health. Their kids range in age from 23 to 9 years old. They felt now that their children are older it is a good time to open a business and offer something different in the area. While originally they had hoped to open sooner, due to pandemic related delays, they received the two golf carts in October.
Coastal Kruzin golf carts are custom built and can sit six people, and have many amenities like cooler, wider seats, upgraded batteries to last all day, two USB chargers, LED lights and in the back. storage for beach chairs and other needs that can accommodate up to 1,000 pounds. The lower to the ground golf carts are, they are more accessible for people of all ages.
Coastal Kruzin’s customers have to be 21 years and older to rent the golf carts and need a valid driver’s license and insurance. Rentals are by the hour and can extend to all day and even overnight. The golf carts are designed to go up to 35 mile per hour and are considered neighborhood electric vehicles and not allowed on the highway or SR-75, except for crossing from one side of town to the other.
The couple have spread the word of their business to local hotels to attract tourists. In the future, the duo plans to offer rentals of electric bikes, jet skis, car seats for toddlers, and beach packages which consist of umbrellas, chairs and beach towels. Beach packages are a convenient way for vacationers to go to the beach and not have to worry about bringing extra stuff.
“We want to be unique, offer something different. When you go on vacation you don’t have to bring everything,” said Hanson. “We’re excited. Families that come want to enjoy seeing Imperial Beach.”
During this holiday season, Coastal Kruizin’s customers have been renting the golf carts to see the neighborhood Christmas lights which allow for better viewing than a car. Next month customers have already booked the two golf carts for a wedding, and recently a venue in North Park found the business and hired the carts.
Winter rates are $149 for the day and a delivery fee applies outside of Imperial Beach. Prices are comparable and affordable. Right now the couple is in the process of working out a way to deliver golf carts to Silver Strand State Park. They believe those with RVs who stay at the park will need a smaller mode of transportation and golf carts can be the answer for them.
Don’t be surprised to see the couple driving a golf cart dressed as Santa and Mrs. Santa Claus this week handing out candy canes.
They are both active in Imperial Beach. Hanson grew up in Imperial Beach and graduated from Mar Vista High School and has coached softball for many years. Benavidez is from South Bay and has made Imperial Beach his home. He is also a member of the Imperial Beach Athletic Club which raises funds for kids.
The couple is looking forward for their business to becoming more known in town. The coupe’s goal is to have a storefront on Seacoast Drive and even expand up the coast one day.
