A water main break flooded the streets and businesses in the Nestor area of San Diego Friday afternoon, Oct. 1. The break happened around 5 p.m. in the 1600 block of Palm Avenue just before 16th Street.
Traffic was stalled as water filled the street and began flooding the nearby South Bay Urgent Care and streets of the nearby Apache trailer Park.
Many residents in the area west of the I5 freeway (92154 and 91932 zip codes) reported having problems of no water or low water pressure. Some reported that water coming from their faucets was tinted yellow.
California American Water’s crew had been working on a water main break at 11th Street and Imperial Beach Boulevard earlier in the week and that it had received a temporary repair.
Friday’s water main break on Palm Avenue, according to a CalAm Water employee, was “… so bad it blew the head off the pipe. It had been installed in 1916 so it was time it was replaced.”
As of Saturday, Oct. 2, by 8 a.m., the water pressure was restored and crews began paving the street and cleaning up the area.
